Retainers

Senior product design, every fortnight.

A fixed fortnightly design service for product teams who need senior UX and UI design, without hiring or juggling freelancers.

04 · FAQ

Common questions.

Everything we usually get asked before a first call.

How does the retainer work?
Each fortnight starts with a short plan of priorities and ends with a summary of what was delivered. In between, we work through the plan and share progress as we go.
What can I ask for?
Anything in UX & UI for your product: flows, screens, prototypes, research, design system work and developer handoff. Marketing sites and working prototypes can be built within your hours. Bigger pieces of work (MVPs, custom platforms, branding and copywriting) can be built inside your retainer too, but they'll take longer at a smaller plan (a full custom platform on Steady can run across several months). If you have a fixed deadline, we'll usually quote it as a separate project so we can scope it properly.
Can you build it too?
Yes. As part of the retainer, we build marketing sites and prototypes, either clickable Figma prototypes or working coded ones, depending on the product and what you need. MVPs and custom platforms are designed and built as separate projects. Everything is reviewed and tested before launch.
Do you work alone, or with a team?
Circlebox's sole designer is Callum. You'll work directly with him on every project. Alex is also part of the team, running the behind-the-scenes and our own products. We have additional senior designers and developers on hand when a project needs more capacity, but we only bring them in with your permission.
Why "about" 16 hours?
It's the time we set aside for your work each fortnight. A guide, not a stopwatch. Our plans are priced on the value we deliver, not the hours we clock. Some fortnights land a little under, some a little over. If a plan is consistently too tight for what you need, we'll suggest moving up.
What if I need more than my fortnightly hours?
We'll tell you before it happens. You can add a 4-hour block for £300 + VAT, move the work into the next fortnight, or switch to a larger retainer (pending availability).
Do unused hours roll over?
No. Each fortnight's hours are for that fortnight. We'll always flag early if we think a fortnight won't be fully used.
How quickly will you reply?
Within 1–2 working days, but normally 1. Design work is scheduled across the fortnight, so you won't always get same-day turnaround.
How does billing work?
Invoices are issued on Fridays and are due upon receipt by bank transfer. UK clients pay VAT at 20% on top. If your finance team prefers, we can invoice every four weeks instead.
Do you work with clients outside the UK?
Yes. We've been working with clients across the US, Canada and Australia for over a decade. Clients outside the UK are invoiced in pounds, with no UK VAT.
Is there a minimum term?
4 weeks to start. After that it rolls on, and you can stop with one fortnight's notice. We keep the contract short and no-nonsense. Plain English, no lock-ins or surprises.
Who owns the work?
You do, once each invoice is paid. We may show the work in our portfolio unless you'd rather we didn't.
How is this different from hiring a designer?
You get senior design without recruitment, salary or notice periods, and you can scale up, down or stop. It suits teams that need steady design, not a full-time hire.
Can you do a one-off project instead?
Yes. Get in touch and we'll quote it separately.
